The Principal is very sorry to announce that The Revd Dr Ivor H Jones, Principal of Wesley House from 1984-1999, died suddenly on 7th April 2016 after a very brief illness.  Our prayers are with his wife Kathleen and his children Michael and Elizabeth and their families.

Ivor will be remembered by so many as a teacher of New Testament, of Greek, of preaching; as a scholar, as a musician, and as a polymath and as a man of indefatigable energy, intelligent faith and wicked humour.

May he rest in peace and rise in glory.

Methodist Church PhD scholarship for research in the area of ‘Methodism, worship and liturgy’

Award: £4000 pa for 3 years (or part-time equiv)

Research beginning: Sep 2016/Jan 2017/Sep 2017.

This initiative by the DMLN’s Director of Scholarship, Research and Innovation and the Faith and Order Committee is seeking to assist the Methodist Church in developing theological expertise in the area of ‘Methodism, worship and liturgy’.

Eligibility: This scholarship is open to presbyters, deacons and members of the British Methodist Church. Where there are two or more applications that are considered to be equal in merit, priority will be given to the applicant who is considered to best enhance ethnic diversity within British Methodist scholarship. If still undetermined, the award will be given the youngest appropriate applicant.

Location of Research: This scholarship is expected to be undertaken at a Methodist or Methodist related institution including The Queen’s Foundation, Cliff College, Wesley House Cambridge, Wesley Study Centre Durham, Urban Theology Unit, Oxford Brookes University and the University of Roehampton. In exceptional circumstances research may be possible elsewhere.

Award: the level of support for research beginning in 2016-17 will be up to £4000 pa for full time study or £2000 pa for part-time study. This support, with an annual increase related to RPI, is offered for 3 years FT or 6 years PT research and will be paid direct to the institution concerned.

Awarding Panel: Applications will be considered by a panel consisting of the Director of Scholarship, Research and Innovation, the Secretary of the Faith and Order Committee, and one appointee of the Liturgy subcommittee.

Application Date: Please submit application materials by 16 May 2016 for consideration for a Sep 2016/Jan 2017 start.

Wesley House is pleased to host the launch of Professor Frances M. Young’s latest book, Construing the Cross.

The launch will be held at Wesley House on Tuesday 22nd March 2016 at 5.00pm. After a book signing and drinks reception, Professor Young will give a devotional address at Evening Prayer.

Wesley House Cambridge is pleased to announce the appointment of a new commissioning editor for the online Journal: HOLINESS.

The Revd Dr Andrew J Stobart is a Presbyter in the Methodist Church of Great Britain. He holds degrees in theology from the University of Aberdeen, the University of Durham and the London School of Theology. Andrew works in the Darlington Methodist Circuit where he is one of the co-Superintendents. His own theological work is in the place and role of the resurrection in systematic theology and his passion is to help churches and ministers to think and work theologically.

Newsletter Michaelmas Term 2015

We are pleased to announce a new partnership between Wesley House Cambridge and three other UK institutions involved in Methodist scholarship. The Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History, Oxford Brookes University, and the Manchester Wesley Research Centre have worked in partnership for several years. In 2012, the centres established a bi-annual seminar series that has now extended to include the Wesley Study Centre, St John’s College, Durham University and Wesley House, Cambridge.

The seminars provide an opportunity for established and emerging students of Methodist Studies to present the findings of their research and scholarship. We conceive of Methodist Studies broadly and aim to provide opportunities for students of history, theology, literature, art, material culture and other fields related to Methodism.

The next seminar will be in Manchester on Saturday 5 December 2015.

Representatives from five continents met in Cambridge this week to think strategically about the global future of Wesley House.

Hopes were expressed that Wesley House might become

• a gathering place for scholars, students and practitioners addressing urgent issues of religious life
• a convener of innovative practice serving the needs of the global church
• a conserver and interpreter of the historic Wesleyan tradition of evangelical intelligence and social piety

There was lively and challenging conversation about how these hopes might become reality through the degree programmes available through Wesley House, through short courses and invited think tanks and through publications like the journal, Holiness.

The Revd Soon Jong Kwon, one of the pastors at Kwanglim Methodist Church in Seoul, reads about the launch of the journal: Holiness, on 25 May.

On Tuesday evening we were delighted to welcome honoured guests to join the conversation including the President of the British Methodist Conference, The Revd Dr Kenneth Howcroft, The President of the Cambridge Theological Federation, The Revd Dr Ian MacIntosh and three of our newly elected Honorary Fellows: The Revd Gareth Powell; The Revd Dr Brian Beck and Prof Morna Hooker-Stacey.

We are thankful for a rich conversation and for the time and commitment of all those who took part.
