The Revd Dr Matthew W. Charlton is Assistant General Secretary in the Division of Higher Education at the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United Methodist Church in the United States. In this role, he supports the church’s ministry to college students in the Methodist connection globally. He is a member of the committee for the Oxford Institute of Methodist Theological Studies and is co-convener of the practical theology working group for the 2018 meeting. He is an ordained elder in the Tennessee Conference of The United Methodist Church and has served as pastor to several local churches in that conference. He has served as the co-chair and chair of the Annual Board of Higher Education and Campus Ministry and as assistant secretary of the Annual Conference. Matt is a member of the adjunct faculty at Belmont University in Nashville, Tennessee and has taught at the Methodist Theological School in Ohio, Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, and Claremont School of Theology.
Matt wrote his PhD dissertation at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, A Wisdom Theology of the Cross, which will be published in 2018. In addition, he has written on the environmental crisis in conversation with Pope Francis’ Laudato Si’ and on the church’s response to the global immigrant and refugee crisis. During his term as a research associate at Wesley House, he will continue his research into wisdom as a theological concept and broaden his research on issues around the church and immigration.
