Poetry in Reflective Pastoral Supervision – Thursday 27 March 2025 from 2-5pm with Mark Pryce.
Mark Pryce is a poet and practical theologian who serves as Director of Ministry for CofE Birmingham. His doctoral research explores the role of poetry in Continuing Professional Development. He completed the Diploma in RPS at Wesley in 2022.
This online training will offer supervisors an opportunity to reflect on using poetry in RPS as a reflexive tool. There will be three elements to the session:
- To map the value of poetry in Reflective Practice with a particular focus on how ministers view poetry as a lens through which to view their life and work.
- To explore ways in which poems can be used to foster reflection in RPS. Participants will be encouraged to share their own practice in using poetry with supervisees.
- An invitation for participants to read poems they find helpful and generative in their work.
Music and Supervision – Thursday 8 May 2025 from 2pm-5pm with Harvey Richardson
Revd Harvey Richardson trained for the Methodist ministry after studying at the Roya Academy of Music in London. Harvey writes:
Throughout my pastoral and preaching ministry, stretching over 50 years, I have been energised by the connection between biblical hermeneutics and the interpretation of music. A growing aesthetical approach to theology has undergirded my interest and desire to convey the Christian gospel in relevant and meaningful ways. I practice my violin every day, endeavouring to keep in tune in every way at all times!
Consequently, a musical approach towards Pastoral Supervision has huge appeal. One of my teachers at the RAM was the amanuensis to the composer Frederick Delius from 1928 to 1934. His relationship with Delius, which involved detailed understanding of shared creative insights and abilities, provides a potent metaphor for Pastoral Supervision today.
