World Parish Webinars

Join us online on the second Tuesday of each month for our series of ‘World Parish Webinars’ which bring together scholars and researchers from around the world for a focused time of theological conferring. The overall theme of the webinars is ‘decolonising theology’, and each time we have a presenter who introduces a paper for discussion.

All are welcome to engage with this exciting venture, jointly hosted by Wesley House, the World Methodist Council and the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of the United Methodist Church.

The June session of the World Parish Webinar brought our six-month series to a close with a panel discussion of the theme ‘illumination’. Panel members included the Revd Jacqui Jones, founding pastor of CrossPoints Church in Johannesburg, South Africa; the Revd Dr Michael Nausner, Methodist theologian and research fellow for the Church of Sweden Research Unit; and the Revd Dr. Elaine Heath, Abbess of the Spring Forest Community in Hillsborough, North Carolina. The Revd Dr Paul W Chilcote hosted this event.

The May session of the World Parish Webinar explored the third of the three themes in this series: illumination. Our presented, the Rev. Dr. Amelia Koh-Butler of the Uniting Church of Australia addressed the topic, “Illuminations: Water and Sand – Reading Native Theologies with a Wesleyan Lens of Spiritual Experience”.

Our April Webinar continued the exploration of the theme ‘Pilgrimage’ with a panel composed of the Rev Dr Steve Manskar, former Director of Wesleyan Leadership with United Methodist Discipleship Ministries; Gillian Kingston, former Vice President of the World Methodist Council and Irish pilgrim; and the Rev Dr Daniel Pratt Morris-Chapman, Wesley House Fellow and Minister of the Ponte Sant’Angelo Church in Rome. The Rev Dr Paul W Chilcote moderated the discussion.

For the March Webinar, the Rev Dr Rodney Aist, global pilgrim, author, and program director for St. George’s College in Jerusalem, provided a presentation on the second sub-theme for the World Methodist Conference, “Pilgrimage.”  The Rev Jacqui Jones, pastor of Gracepoint Church in Johannesburg and Wesley House alumna, hosted the event.

The February Webinar continued the exploration of ‘Migration’ by means of a panel, including the Rev. Leao Neto, a native-Brazilian who oversees immigrant churches in the MCB; Rev. Oscar Siu, a Wesley House doctoral student of Chinese descent; and Rev. Gavin Rogers, who has been involved in immigration issues at the US southern border as a pastor in Texas. The Rev. Dr. Filipe Maia, of Boston University, moderated the discussion.

Bishop Minerva Carcano, chair of the Immigration Task Force for the United Methodist Council of Bishops, presented on the theme “Migration” – the first sub-theme of the World Methodist Conference to be held in 2024. Revd Dr Paul Chilcote served as host for this event.

Dr. Lilian C. Siwila, associate professor of theology at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, presented to the June 2021 World Parish Webinar on the topic, “Trapped between the Pew and the Altar: Wesleyan Liturgy and decoloniality on African feminist perspective”. The Rev. Jacqui Rivas served as host for this session.
